Lloyds of London

By Nigeyboy
Lloyds of London building, 1 Lime St, London. 95m / 14 floors.

Probably my favourite ‘modern’ building in London. 1 Lime St was opened in 1986 as the home of Lloyds in the City of London. Loosely based on Paris’s Pompidou Centre that opened 9 years earlier, it has the main services (ie air con, stairs, lifts etc) on the building exterior. This leaves the internal space uncluttered, and more usable and upgradable.

This building also has the honour of being the youngest structure in the UK to be granted Grade 1 Listing, which it was awarded in 2011. Historic England said it was "universally recognised as one of the key buildings of the modern epoch"
