Local Griffons Vultures, Crete

By PatriciaWilson
I saw them winging in from my office window, and then realized a sheep had died just below our village church.
Quite amazing to watch them feed.

I've seen more aggression in the sparrows on my bird table.

thanks for looking.
Any crit welcome.
Patricia.

A fantastic capture, Patricia. Are they being affected by the gale force winds we are experiencing here at present? Carol

Thanks Barry, I don't know about the African Vultures, but I've been studying the local ones for over a decade.
The ones that have eaten, stand back and keep guard while the next lot move in.

I also notice they have some trouble taking off with a full crop of food, and tend to sit back on their tails with their wings out for five minutes.

Thanks Carol, Griffons never fly in rain. I think their wingspan, at nine feet, is just two heavy when wet. They simply sit on their ledges and starve until better weather.
The best time to go Griffon watching is after a couple of days bad weather.

Even on sunny days they have to wait until the sun hits their south facing ledges and a thermal pushes through the gorge before they can launch themselves off their ledge, because they need the extra lift.
