Locks at Devizes

By Glostopcat
A set of eight images all taken last Thursday when going through the flight of 29 locks at Devizes in Wiltshire on my holiday on the Kennet and Avon canal on a narrowboat called "Foxterrier". The weather was perfect for the time of year and the crew of 5 I went with managed to go through the locks twice, it took around 4 1/2 hours to go up the flight and about 3 1/4 hours to go down the flight. The main flight of 16 locks at Caen Hill in Devizes is part of a longer series of 29 locks on this stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal. The total rise is 237 feet (72m) 2 miles (3.2km) or a 1 in 30 gradient. The locks come in three groups, seven at Foxhangers where we hired the boat from, sixteen at Caen Hill and six at the town end of the flight. The 16 locks at Caen Hill utilise unusually large side ponds to store the water needed to operate. At the time I travelled through them much restoration work was being undertaken by British Waterways to return them to their former state. V1 shows one of our crew members Chris M opening one of the locks at Caen Hill when descending them on the Thursday

Yes I opened and closed a fair number of locks and swing bridges on the trip. I didn't fall in although we did lose a lock key overboard, which Ken luckily managed to retrieve with his huge magnet he brought along in case of any mishaps.

Now there's a sturdy bunch of men who are not afraid to work hard. I hope they're just as keen to mow the lawn and wash up... Good set.

It is virtually impossible to get all the locks in one shot unless you take the photograph from a helicopter or crane

An excellent set of images and a wonderful record of your holiday Ed, though it looks like it required quite a bit of hard work at times, the chap at midboat in V1 looks a bit precarious, hope he didn't fall in..........liked your description too!
Rgds., Jim
