William Cooper who wrote the hymn quoted here on the tombstone had a life long battle with depression which led to him attempting suicide several times. It reminds us that many of the greatest hymns grow out of life’s most difficult circumstances.

Amazing, we have gravestones in the local cemetery with this strange lead lettering, some with equally sad messages. Very well taken.
