I much prefer not-quite symmetry to pure symmetry. Not-quite adds an edge, an uncertainty. That's what the chimney on the right does for me. While the perfectly placed figure holds the lines together. In short, well seen for the composition.

I wanted to crop just a sliver off the left, to balance the two upper corners, have the diagonals disappearing into both.

Processing - here I'm not so sure. This looks significantly over-sharpened for my taste, particularly noticeable when you blow it up. The outline of the top edge of the masonry in particular is too much of a hard dark line... And something has happened in the sky near the top, there's a blotchiness that shouldn't occur at 100 ISO.

I wanted to use that over-sharpening and the slightly graphic look that it gives with a high contrast b&w. Converted in Nik Silver Efex, I pushed the Structure slider up much further than I would normally do. I quite like the effect.

I blurred the sky at the top a bit to get rid of the blotchiness.

Its very much over processed, to the point its destructive.

Mono as Moira suggests is one way to manage this, - or, if you still have the original un-processed image, upload it here by clicking the modifications button, then select Upload, then select your original.

However, - did you deliberately intend for this to be OTT?

I'm with Moira on the composition - and with Willie on the technical side. The lines are edgy, too harsh: there's a limit to what sharpening can achieve, and if you want every grain of gravel, every tiny area of texture in the stone, you need to be looking at large format, with an appropriate zillion-megapixel back, rather than an ordinary DSLR.

However, down that route lies a great deal of cost, and probably much unhappiness: the sensible thing is to work within the limitations of the medium, and be delighted by the resolution that you have got.

It's like cars: however much a young lad tricks out a Fiesta, it will never match the acceleration of an Aston Martin, or the roadholding of a Subaru. On the other hand, driven well and within its limits, it's cheap and satisfying transport. the secret is to work with what it does well.

A 750D is an amazing piece of technology, and if you ensure that you shoot at the optimum aperture for the focal length (I'm sure there are plenty of online tests that will reveal which apertures are best at every setting) you will need only a little bit of tweaking of sharpness to get stunning results. Beware raising clarity as well as sharpness in editing - the two are cumulative...

I see from your portfolio that you put this into the main gallery on 11th March, Phil, and I wonder if that's the original?
The trouble is that we cannot upload it and modify it unless it is either uploaded with the Modifiable option, or put into the Critique Gallery.
Looking at it, there is a suggestion that you have done a lot of processing and also perhaps imported a different sky or pushed it too far. If you upload the original here we can start from the beginning. You can either add it as a Version or as a Modification.
It's a fine image and well worth some TLC.

I tried to sharpen the picture but went a bit mad with the sliders.
The sky looked a bit dull but once again over processed.
The comments, hints & tips on my work are very much appreciated, thank you.

The image is quite sharp already.
I see what you mean about the sky.
I used Levels to get a bit of graduation in it, but didn't succeed very well, so went over that with a blue flood fill at low opacity, so there's just a hint of cloud left there. The alternative would be to import another sky, of course.

Firstly, I cropped all sides and got the top of either side going into the top corners. I found that your verticals were good and straight, so didn't need to adjust them.
I brightened the image, slightly deepened the shadows, increased the highlights, added a touch of colour saturation and gently sharpened.
I then used the Magic Wand to select the sky because I wanted to leave that as it was, then inverted the selection so that the stonework was selected. Then I adjusted Levels.

PS: Looking at my modification, I am a bit upset because it looks far sharper than in my editing programme, and I was so careful not to oversharpen it. Not sure why that is. Sorry.

Thanks for the original version, Phil - so much nicer to my eye. I've done a mod with a crop and a fractional sharpen using Nik Efex, though at half the default setting there!

The answer with skies is repeated visits, and possibly a polarising filter to help bring out the blues (when there are some). It can also help suppress highlights on wet stone and leaves.

Alternatively - and it's something I lack the skill for, and the interest - is to graft in a believeable but more interesting sky from another shot. You need to take care that they match up decently, though - different light directions, different colour balance and so on can make the improvement nominal...

I've done a second mod and toned down the sharpening.
