Lunch 136

By SimonFletch
Greetings everyone. Thank you for your Votes and Comments on 'Lunch 135 - The Greater Blue-eared Glossy Starling', "iridescent" seeming to sum its appearance by many. "it's got a very Tim Burton face! Corpse Birde"... Andrew? Rob, the Pirate seemed to agree, but in my ignorance, I had to Google it. "Corpse Bride" came up and to my utter amazement, there was Your Moniker , Andrew..!! Andrew is Johnny Depp, everyone..! Still plugging that film, nine years on, Andrew..?! Wonderful 'comment', but likening the Starling to your moniker, I'm confused-dot-com...!

Anyway, the Starling's very bright eye also seemed to draw some attention. No PS involved, folks, it was simply the angle the sun hit the bird - also making its feathers really "iridescent". I am not clever enough to to do that kind of thing in PS - computers were not invented when I were a lad..!

Today's 'Lunch'
Some more images from the time I spent with a Grey Heron, in Olare Orok Conservancy, next to Masai Mara, Kenya. It caught countless tiny fish, which it un-spectacularly 'sipped' into its beak, many, without raising its head from the river. Just occasionally, it would lift a fish with a flicking motion and stand upright (for a Heron) and pose for my camera.

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a very large bird of 38" (100cm), found in open or reedy margins and bankside areas of lakes, rivers, marshes and estuaries. It is an accomplished fisherman and is not beyond taking other prey, such as reptiles, young birds and small mammals.

It has a strange call, which sounds like "fronk".

Have a Wonderous Wednesday, everyone ...!

Superb, pin-sharp shots Simon and one of my favourite subjects as well. I once saw a heron take a fish (a tench I think) the size of a small canoe (maybe a slight exaggeration) it was so big the poor bird couldn't take off and had to walk away.

Pin sharp action shots here and the colour is superb.

You are back in Scotland now so when do we get lunch shots of people scoffing deep fried Mars Bars?

Tried to take some shots of "our" Grey Heron yesterday, but it was far too dark to get any real definition, but lovely to see them `hunting' in the dusk light. Well captured Grin

A great series of this heron feeding Simon. Such shy birds that I can't get near far less catch them feeding.

11 Jun 2014 2:25PM resemblance 'tween my avatar and your starling. I meant that your starling looks like how Tim Burton would've drawn the bird Grin

Speaking of birds, superb shots you've got of this heron! My favourite of the 3 is V2, simply because its neck is all pretzelly there and I'm feeling peckish.

On a side note, my nose is getting stuffy and I hope I'm not heading for a cold. If so, must be careful how I blow my nose. Don't wanna go 'fronk' and attract any amorous herons.
