The Mínong hilltribe is another of the many ethnic minority in Vietnam. They are best known for their skill in hunting elephants and domesticating them for use in war, for transport and for their ivory. Today the elephants are used for transporting tourists on short tours of the Lak Lake area.

The Mínong people are the creators of the lithophone, a kind of stone xylophone thought to be among the world's most ancient musical instruments. There are concerts of ďGong musicĒ in the Jun village and also in the hotel nearby.

The Mínong have lived in the southern central highlands for centuries, and now around 70,000 people are concentrated in the region between Buon Me Thuot and Da Lat.

Mínong houses are called ďLong HousesĒ. They are on stilts on built flat on the ground. Their society is generally matrilineal but a male chief runs the affairs of the village.

Mínong craftsmen are reknown for their basketry, printing textiles and copper, tin and silver jewellery worn by both sexes.

Lak Lake is a beautiful site and there are lots of interesting villages to visit as well as the charm of the paddy fields. A ride on an elephantís back from the ďLak Lake Tourist ResortĒ along the lake and then across it to the Jun village is a marvellous experience.

The girl and on the other versions the boy were happy to have their photo taken. I like the expression of curiosity in their eyes.
