Maasai Aerobics

By SisterPinkie
Taken in a Maasai village earlier this year.

These guys were amazing but I found this part of my trip a little disconcerting as the village is a 'tourist village' set up specifically to entertain visitors and provide an 'insight' into Maasai life. There is a fee to go in, set pieces of entertainment such as creating fire and dancing and a market where you can buy their goods. It all felt very sad and when I looked later at the pictures I took of the women singing there appeared to be no expression in their faces - all very resigned and compliant. No joy.

The trip was still fantastic however and I enjoyed speaking with them and their families - don't want this to be too negative!

Very nice photo, but you are right, this kind of life no longer exists, only kept alive for the sake of tourism.

I had just spent 2 weeks working in clinics in the north west Turkana Region where the rural, pastoral way of life still has real meaning and a lot of extreme poverty so seeing this afterwards made me very uncomfortable and cynical. In hindsight I would rather have spent 3 weeks in Turkana!
