Magere Brug

By TrevBatWCC
Part of the canal boat trip took us out into the River Amstel just south of this, the most famous bridge in Amsterdam, Magere Brug. A bascule bridge made of white-painted wood, the present bridge was built in 1934, the first being built in 1691. Because the bridge was very narrow, the locals called it magere brug, which literally means "skinny bridge". Use of the bridge has been limited to pedestrians and cyclists since 2003. It is however opened many times a day in order to let through river traffic, but the boats used for sightseeing tours are low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed.
Shooting through the boat's window at 62mm gave me the lead image, but zoomed back to 21mm for V1 to frame the bridge with the window - and include one of our fellow passengers! V2 was taken only about 1 minute later, looking up through the boat's glass roof, just as we started to pass underneath it.

Many thanks to Harriet, Joline, Helen (helenlinda), Peter (Mollycat), Oliver (bliba) and Phil (PhilT2) for their User Awards on my previous upload A bridge within a bridge within a bridge . . . , most appreciated Smile

Fine shot of the bridge Trev. Your information is very interesting indeed. I have a couple of shots of this bridge but knew very little about it.

Very interesting Trev - hadn't heard of this bridge and wouldn't have guessed that magere meant skinny.

Interesting intro to this set, Trev, and so well captured: I have seen photos of this bridge elsewhere but did not know all the info that you have provided.

Great shots Trev. Love the narrative. Not enough people take time to describe their pics.
