Make Do and Mend

By HelenaJ
I know this is a bit wacky, but I thought I would give a panel a go and came up with this idea. It is a development of something I did a few years ago. I would be interested to see if it has impact and if it makes you think. Also there isn't absolute consistency across the images, is this OK - or would you recommend I work on that a bit more to improve the overall image. All thoughts and suggestions are welcomed. Grin

Hi Helena. A novel idea, so well done for coming up with the concept.

I am guessing here, but assume you prepared/stitched one fruit, photographed it, repeated the process with the second fruit and then the third?
If so, this has resulted in the cloth/underlay being placed somewhat randomly from shot to shot. The lighting also varies - you have three different nuances of white.

I would have first arranged the scene with the cloth as you want it to appear throughout the sequence, also the light - test with a piece of fruit until you have a set-up/light that works.
When happy, leave it alone and prepare/stitch all three fruits at once. That way you can photograph them with the cloth in the same place on each shot and under consistent light conditions, resulting in far more consistency in the three images, giving, in my opinion, a far more pleasing result for the triptych.

The differences wouldn't really matter if the images were being shown individually, but as a part of a panel, they work far better with better consistency from frame to frame.

GrinGrinGrinGrin !!....great shots !....lovely creative idea, & well executed, with nice clarity & rich colours...clever you !!.Smile

The only minor change might be to add a touch of backlighting, to add a touch of sparkle & 'roundness' to
the fruits......other than that it's a beauty !!!.Grin

To some extent, the novelty of the idea overrides the detail. But I think, for perfection, that you need to be really consistent in brightness, and possibly in how the subject is placed on the background...

So it's possibly something that you need to reshoot, withough changing lighting and background position, or - perhaps - making changes so that they work as a deliberately varying triptych. So angle the camera slightly differently, moving round hte subject between the three.

I think that Keith's suggestion of a little backlight is sound, too.

In other words, it's such a good idea that I think you should consider redoing and really pulling all the stops out to make it perfect... (I've just reviewed some really weird shots I took yesterday, and reckon I need to do more, with lighting and background tweaked to the maximum, and even some extra thought on shutter speed...)

Well done you for the novelty of the idea and the patience to do it!

On this specific triptych or in your future ones I would suggest you not to follow the alphabet to sequence the "subjects", namely: Kiwi, Lemon, Tomato, but to think thdm as manifestations of colour. I would have put the darkest in the middle or follow them as they mature from one colour to another, if you have an apple for example.

I take my hat off for your creativity. Bravo!

Wonderful idea here in this triptych, I always did feel sorry for damaged kiwi fruit, my feelings now go out to lemons and tomatos too. Is there a fruit rescue home I wonder? Love the surreal concept here 🙂🙂

Novel and very refreshing Helena to look at something original. If I see another landscape in early morning light or ancient wrinkled Indian man in a smokey atmosphere I will scream.

What a wonderful idea! And a wonderful triptych too, Helen 👍 My only niggle is as said above the difference in lighting on the embroidery - also the size of the image on the right, being smaller than the other two, I'd want them to be all the same size. Having said that, love it! 😀

The first thing that struck me was the frame on the right being smaller than the others. And I would agree with much of what has already been said, particularly with regards to the lighting.

Yes. I am very much impressed with the originality and creative vision here. Refreshing.
