Marking territory.

By Coen
This is actually a very interesting photo, As we were watching this female rhino with a calf not far from her she notice two young adults approaching ,we saw her running towards them and about thirty meters she stopped and then the photo, she turned and went back to the calf. the two young ones walk ed up to the marking sniffed and took a different route. First time in my life that I have seen this ,it was amazing.

Makes perfect sense. A lot of animals mark their territory with urine. It could also be that she is letting them know she's calfed out recently and not ready for any male attention. Most species have a healthy respect for new mothers.
