Marsh Harrier

By NeilSchofield
In flight series from the Akrotiri salt marshes in Cyprus, not too sure this is still about as a group of crows chased it over to the coast, where there was about a dozen 4x4 vehicles with hunters and dogs spread out across a two mile stretch

Lots of shots rang out, but didnt see the bird return, nor was it seen on subsequent days

Cyprus is not a good place for wildlife in my view, I was told that there are around 50 thousand licences issued each year and hunting is allowed on Sundays and wednesdays, during the season however we saw and heard shots on every day, even in areas where hunting is prohibited, we also saw evidence of cartridges everywhere in the protected areas

On or way out an hour before dawn on sundays and wednesdays, there were convoys of 4x4 vehicles with dog boxes in the back heading towards the hills, I gave up counting at 50 going the opposite way one morning

Interestingly though at the dam sites there were signs up warning that fishing without a permit can result in a six month prison sentence and fine of E13K

The place should be a wildlife paradise, but you have to travel extensively, look hard and long to find any
