Cascades d'Ouzoud, Tanaghmeilt, Azilal, Morocco.

Cascades d'Ouzoud, are a multi-stepped, 110metres high, set of waterfalls situated in the Grand Atlas village of Tanaghmeilt, in the province of Azilal, approximately a 150km north-east of Marrakech, in Morocco.

The vicinity boasts green valleys, mills, orchards, and a superb circuit highlighting the gorges of the El Abid River - (Slaves' River in Arabic).

Ouzoud is the Berber word for "olive" - referring to the nearby olive trees.

The bottom of the falls is accessible through a shaded path of olive trees. At the summit, there exist a dozen old small mills that are still in use.

There is a narrow and difficult track leading to the road of Beni Mellal. The descent from the gorges at the Wadi el Abid, has a drop of nearly 600 meters.

Many local and national associations lead projects to protect, and preserve, what is the most visited site of the region.

In the twilight, whole troops of Barbary Macaques can be observed. The species is considered one of the Old World monkeys and are the only free living primates in Europe, with the exception of humans.

Their gregarious nature typically sees them live in troops of between 10 to 30. It is a matriarchal system, which means that the head female (through lineage) - leads the group. However, the males play a vital role in rearing and caring for offspring.

Taken on March 13th 2008.
