Hi Freda,

I can tell you all about taking night shots of Melbourne because it is my home.

Frank is absolutely right and a tripod is an essential item but not always accessible when on holiday etc. I would suggest that you contact EPZ members from the city you are going to and see if they can lend a hand, I would have gladly met up with you and given you some tips as well letting you use my tripod etc. This saves you from carrying everything with you on holiday and I'm sure many would gladly be only too pleased to assist.

Another essential for night shots like this is to switch off any vibration reduction you may have whilst the camera is on the tripod regardless of whether it is built into the camera or in the lens. I have seen blurred shots from a tripod which was caused by this very thing. Another thing is to take these shots a dusk (or dawn) when the sky still has some features in it and not when it is completely dark. This gives you a better picture because you don't have such a dark expanse where the sky should be.

Your shot is taken from the Crown Casino area on South Bank but if you are ever in Melbourne again then try going to Birrarung Mar which is on the north side just down the river from Federation Square and you'll find a much nicer city shot to take with the Princes Bridge as a foreground.

Hope this helps
