Memories of Deal

By dandeakin

“There’s been three piers over the years. This one was rebuilt after the war. The previous one was knocked over by a torpedoed ship. I was only 13 and we heard the lifeboat rockets go off over the town. We all rushed down to see The Nora floating West past the pier. It was rough seas and the ship then drifted east onto the Pier. The local men had attached lines from the shore and local lads climbed the rigging and started stripping the ship. The remaining Pier was blown up by the authorities a little later to stop the Germans using it.”
