Memory and light

By mrswoolybill
Composer Arvo Pärt described his work thus:
“I could compare my music to white light, which contains all colours. Only a prism can divide the colours and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener.”
There's a rather wonderful installation at Belsay Hall, based on Pärt's work. His music plays inside a horseshoe arrangement of glass slats – the glass appears to be clear but at the right angle the ends of the slats show up in colour. Viewed like this they remind me of the strings of a harp.
I shall be uploading from here for the rest of this week.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Knowing absolutely nothing about this composer, I turned to everyone's friend, Wiki.
This is what they have to say:

Quote:Arvo Pärt (Estonian, born 11 September 1935) is an Estonian composer of classical and religious music. Since the late 1970s, Pärt has worked in a minimalist style that employs his self-invented compositional technique, tintinnabuli. Pärt's music is in part inspired by Gregorian chant. His most performed works include Fratres (1977), Spiegel im Spiegel (1978), and Für Alina (1976). Since 2011 Pärt has been the most performed living composer in the world.

Fascinating and mildly disturbing 😁
GrinGrinGrinGrinsuper simplicity. Like an absorption spectrum jumbled.

Thanks again folks.
The music is austere, spare; individual notes breaking the silence. That's what I see in the colours.

A badly strung harp was what went through my mind when I saw the thumbnail.

Thanks Moira. I hadn't heard of Arvo Pärt so i just had a listen to, Spiegel im Spiegel and
Salve Regina, on you tube. Very Inspirational and slightly hypnotic. I'm going back to listen to some more.
