This is a picture of Merryn my 5 month old black lab. This has been cropped to square, and the background blurred a little more.

It is not easy taking pics of a black dog, I have not yet got the dynamic action picture I have been looking for. In full sun she often turns to silhouette.

Any advice?

Thanks for the nice comments.

I have done another version, a tighter crop of head only and in b/w to emphasis the sheen (contrast) in her coat. But I cannot post it until tomorrow!!

This really stood out in the thumbnails - I've been flicking through Nick Ridleys How to Photograph Dogs today in the bookshop, and this is almost as good as anything in there.

I say almost, cos the full shot shows that the eyes are not sharp, and it lets the whole shot down. Apart from that, I think youve done a great shot - on almost all my blackfaced dog portraits I complain about the fur and the eyes - You have managed to get the eye colour right, if they were in focus this would be spot on!

I agree re the eyes. Are they sharp in the original (in which case the jpeg uploading may have softened them a bit)..

Re the blurring, it's just a bit noticeable in some places where it comes right up to the dog and the margin between dog and bacground is a bit fuzzy. Just needs taken a bit mor painstakingly slowly. lovely portrait

Thanks for all the comments/advice.

I have just looked back at my RAW original, the eyes are clearer, but not spot on.

I also notice that I did not really need to add the gaussian blur, the DOF was good before with the grass way out of focus; all I succeeded doing was blurring the edges of her coat!

Hi. Thanks for your comment on my black lab pic. I think your camera may have focused on Merryn's collar. The collar looks clear to me, while his nose and perhaps eyes are not super clear. i know what you mean about shooting a black lab, or black dog....not the easiest. Have you tried with a flash? Not sure that would help, but even in broad day light, flash can be good. I will upload another pic of my black lab with snow on her nose, that makes her look much better! The white helps. I also have a silver lab, much easier to shoot with those light eyes. Keep trying. LinnC
