MIG 15

Two seater Polish built MIG 15 at Duxford on Saturday. First one that I've seen. A very pretty aircraft and a terrible shock to the UN forces in Korea when it appeared. Only countered by the North American Sabre.

A very nice day at Duxford. Treated myself to the 'GOLD' experience and it was well worth it. Excellent viewpoint and facilities. Was actually too sunny and bright causing some exposure difficulties when changing from air to ground shots quickly.

Three camera bodies, each with different lens and thus no lens changing. I have an external power pack for the XT-3 and a good job - shot near 5000 images on that body alone without battery change.

An iconic shot of a ground-breaking early jet. It brings back memories of the early Arfix kit (2/- in those days) and having to weight the nose with lengths of solder to keep it sitting correctly on the undercarriage and maintain the open appearance of that central intake.

I hate to think what 5,000 images would have cost in the days of 35mm film. Even so, editing them should give you something to while away the longer evenings.

I was there on Sunday and suffered the same problem, at least, until it rained.

I "only" took about 1500 shots (and two rolls of 36exp, Fujicolour). I'd have been hard pressed to find 5,000 things to take shots of!

I had three cameras going and use 5 frames per second for flying and moving shots with continuous auto focus. I got there at 08.10 and left at 18.00 and shoot in best JPG. I vary settings all the time so shutter speeds for props, aperture selection and so on - quite a few possible combinations.

I can easily shoot 1000 frames in a couple of hours at Bempton. I then pick the better ones - often from sets that look very similar to one another. The thing is wing positions vary from frame to frame with birds, prop positions and aircraft formatting positions change all he time. High production rate gives more variety to select the better positions.

I also shoot, when set on single frame, in bursts of two exposures quickly as you are trained to do with a pistol. Adds a bit of protection against closed eyes - etc. Digital allows this at minimal extra cost, so why not do it?

Shutter count is high, though, but the camera is a tool to be used.

I only had the one digital camera, a D7200, with me but I was taking mostly single shots, sometimes in quick succession for the flying shots.

Like yourself, I was constantly having to make adjustments to settings but the greatest issue that I kept on suffering (and I do know better) was forgetting to readjust the exposure compensation when switching between ground and ariel shots.

I wish too, that I'd taken another camera, armed with a wider lens.

I was seated in the front row of the spectator area next to the grandstand and right on the flightline. It was a great position to watch and photograph the flying and many of the aircraft taxied past, right in front of me at the end of their displays but the AF-P 70-300 that I was using was too long to get the aircraft in the frame once they were directly opposite me.

I got lots of close ups and detail shots but none of the aircraft, in their entirety, in complete profile.

My trusty old D90 with its 18-135 would have sufficed!

I was in the front row in the Gold Experience enclosure and had a similar view to you. I tend to shoot detail of the static and slow moving aircraft. Just the pilot and cockpit as they taxi past for example. Everyone shots full aircraft and detail allows the give away background to be occluded.

Lenses were 18-55, 50-140 and 100-400 with 1.4 X converter, so covered from 24mm to 840mm in 35mm terms. Having spent a lot of money getting there, I shoot a lot, then sort it out later.

I too was at Duxford Saturday and I agree it was to too sunny. The other problem being late in the year was that the sun was in front of the crowd effectively back lighting the planes when in the air. So i was waiting to shoot some planes when they banked round to the left of airfield as you look on to the runway from the spectator side.
I have purchased a used sigma 150-600 contemporary lens. I am a strong fit individual . With outva monopod it is very difficult to hold steady and track a plane. My go to lens is a canon EF 70-300L IS USM. Due to the aviation rules the aircraft arr so far away you need lenses over 300mm to get decent subject size in the frame. I also borrowed a mates sony A6500 to use along side my canon eos 7Dii. I must say the sony is very food with sharp images, good AF, good tracking AF and EVF is a joy to have for chomping on a very sunny day.
Being a peasant in the general hord crowd I did get back of heads in my images and be aware not to bonk people on the head with my telezoom lenses. Lol
