In the west, the common crane (grus grus) spends the warmer months of the year in northern Scandinavia and Russia, then in the autumn around 300,000 of them head for the Mediterranean (southern Europe AND North Africa) - a trip of a round 2500km.
Many of them pass over our area in the typical V formation you can see in the photo.
A big bird, around 2m wingspan and weighing between 4 and 6kg, it has a loud trumpeting call, given in flight and display. The call is piercing and can be heard from a considerable distance.
This year it is said they were calling "bugger your lockdown, we're off to the sun".

I think they’ve got social distancing sorted with that formation, so are justified with their calls 🙂. Beautiful to see.

Must be an amazing sight and not least sound when they pass overhead, David.

A superb sight. They seem slightly smarter on parade in version one, but all good. I think they've got the right idea.

Wonderful how they talk with each other as they fly--like giving a head up to anyone in their way!
