Mine entrance

Point of entry of the Bridgewater Canal into the old mine.
Worsley, Salford.

The Bridgewater Canal (1761) was arguably the first inland waterway win Britain to be cut from scratch. Others before it had been created by linking and improving existing natural waterways. Some have argued that the Sankey Canal (St Helens to the Mersey) holds the title of first place because was opened 3 years before the Bridgewater. However, the Parliamentary approval records show it as "making navigable the river or brook called Sankey Brook". Although there were some existing brooks near the route of the Bridgewater it was cut from scratch directly from within the mine at Worsley to the centre of Manchester. It ran at one level all the way and crossed the River Irwell on an aqueduct. When the Irwell itself was canalised in the creation of the Manchester Ship Canal, the aqueduct was replaced by the Barton Swing Aqueduct. This is still in use today.

There are 46 miles of canal within the mine on 4 levels linked by inclined planes. Coal production ceased in 1887.

Lead for me too, I like the composition and content of the photo, especially the sculpture on the left - a false reflection. Are they sunken barges in the foreground providing a nice lead-in to the mine entrance. The version does make one want to go in and explore the mine.
The mine was some feat of engineering, is it open for visits or subject to elfensafety?
