Cant help feeling that the lighting is bland and 2 dimensional, the eyes look unnatural. The pose is unorginal, I really cant see what this has to deserve an HC. Its sharp and well exposed, HC? Sorry I dont get it, can someone explain? You have much better stuff than this in your p/f.

Stix, do you really have to be so mean? I don't understand why there needs to be a debate on my photo. I put a lot of love and time into this image. Can't I just enjoy my HC?

Quote:HC? Sorry I dont get it, can someone explain?

Ask Pete ... he awarded it, why question it here? If you don't agree then take it up with him privately, not on someone's work.

Crit the shot by all means, I'm sure people would like to see any faults you feel it may have, maybe you could be a little more diplomatic though!

maybe...maybe not.... Smile Not everyone is as diplomatic as you, Paul..Wink

Having say that, I don't mind the shot at all and you can have my vote (Smile); But then I don't know much about portraiture like Stix.

Why not? If people want to defend the picture and it gets a debate going, all the better I think.

Good luck Cole! I am sure that you do very well!

Stix, you can rip my photo to shreds, critique it all you want, but please don't openly post that my photo doesn't deserve an HC. Please leave those sort of comments to the PM system. Your public comment really upset me. I always appreciate critique (because critique makes me a better tog) but I personally don't care for debates.

There is only Pete who needs to defend anything as he awarded it. Why not just ask him personally instead of belittling the award and upsetting the person who posted it [Becka or otherwise]?

Paul.
Good lighting in a studio is about what you don't light, this shot has no light and shade hence the lack of depth, drama , artistry that lifts a shot above the ordinary or worthy of an award. That's only my opinion Pete is entitled to his, and I'm entitled to disagree with him.
I know Pete would not expect every one to agree with him, and i know he would encourage critque rather than the 'lovely shot' type comments.
Thats my last word.

Martin.
Thanks for pointing out what is good studio lighting, in my many years as a graphic designer and art director I've been involved in a number of studio and location commissions, so I'm pretty much aware of what works anyway. Thanks though for clarifying it, maybe someone will now learn from that.

Quote:That's only my opinion Pete is entitled to his, and I'm entitled to disagree with him

No-one said you weren't, the manner in which you did it was out of order for me. If all you wanted was for Pete to explain it then why didn't you approach him away from the shot rather posting your vitriolic comments and upsetting Rebekah on her shot? At no point - other than a sarcastic 'sorry' - have you shown any hint of remorse for upsetting her.

I know Pete would encourage critique too, but it costs nothing to be a little more approachable with it ... I wouldn't expect you to leave a 'lovely shot' comment anyway.

FWIW, I tend to agree with Martin in that the lighting does seem to be a little 2 dimensional - though this may have been what you set out to achieve. My preference would be a little more directional side-lighting, just to add a little more 'depth' and modeling to the subject.

I think there's a softness on the face just needs reigning back in a little as it feels a little overworked [for me].

The pose I like though, but as I'm no expert in this field, maybe others can suggest an improvement to it.

In general, I do like the shot ... congrats on your HC too.

Guess that's up to me then.
I like the light on this. It may be two dimensional but it's good. I like the way the light has created a defined dark key line around the arms that lifts her from the background. The more direct flash approach has also created the tiny sparkling catchlight which has made her eyes shine. The eye contact is good. The detail in the hair has been really lifted. I don't have a problem with the face, this technique is used on many portraits and there's more detail here than on some of the genuine in the flesh hollywood faces. The pose is fine. This model is used to glamour so it's difficult to get them out of glamour style and this pose has helped. And the choice of background complements the shot perfectly. Ok it's not a Benjikan or Carsten style light, but model shots don't have to have dramatic lighting to work. Look at the thousands of shots of this model on the web and you'll struggle to find any better.

Well...this has caused quite a stir...LOL

Firstly congrats on your HC...enjoy.

...after reading all the comments some I agree with and some I don't....if this was my shot my crit would be that the skin is a little over done on the arms , especially the LHS....and also her face could be toned down a tad.....I love her hair and I like the BG you have used.

Well here's my 10 cents worth. I like everything about the image but am puzzled by the models right arm which is soft, but it can't be out of focus cos it's in the same plane as the left arm

So is it 'brushed for some reason?? Oh. I just noticed the hair around the right arm looks added, so maybe the arm has been - moved?? added?? Now I'm even more puzzled

Fascinating discussion BTW but I have nothing to add to it except my vote for the image

I'm tired now after reading this far down...

But, here goes...

Excellent pose, because it caused those lovely creases in her teeshirt, which give it something extra, and which is PERFECTLY exposed btw!
Somewhat soulless expression - but that's not your fault, it's my overexposure to models who always seem to do that "Ah, yes, this is how to do sultry" look and forget to inject any personality or individuality...
Lovely eyes Smile
Lovely hair, actually... outstanding hair, not because of the keratin itself, but what you've done to make it lovely, glossy and well defined. Have you ever thought of doing hair products ads?? Wink
Soft left side arm? ... a bit puzzling, it's definitely different to her other arm but I don't think it looks softer. There is a suggestion of a faint halo, perhaps that is what is being seen?
Great position in the frame with that nice empty space at right.
Her plastic surgeon should be shot IMHO - they are definitely disproportionate Sad
The lighting is subtly superb... there is so much to admire about that!
So, in summary... well done & well done on't HC too Smile
Now I'm going to bed...

I think this has a lovely balance of very complimentry colours and tones the girl is absolutely gorgeous and very enjoyable viewing "those boobs look expensive buy the way lol" some times when your confronted with a chance to take shots of someone who is obviously a pro in her field it can be a little nerv racking and photographers tend to rush things and overlook something important but I dont find this image lacking. Congrats on your HC and I suggest that you ignore any negative comments or sour grapes you should be encouraged as much as anyone should be encouraged who is obviously moving in the right direction and ever improving since the day they joined epz.

I'd just like to say that this is a very well thought out and professional image, that has obviously taken time and effort to get right. When you look back at how far you have come over what I would say is a realitively short space of time, and on your own initiative and effort, I think you are doing fantastic, and certainly better than I and many others do. So, congrats on the HC, enjoy it in the knowledge that it was awarded because you produced a damn good professional image.

Well done Becka.

What a load of childish palaver from adults Smile
I think you should have sent him a private message and ticked him off for the rude HC comments...not dragged it out onto here. Don't apply for a job in the diplomatic service Stix!
Everyone has there own way of seeing/doing things and with that in mind I think it looks great Smile If the lighting or anything else had been different, it would'nt have been the same good looking content/effect that most of us obviously like.
