Mist on Rannoch Moor

By Bigpoolman
Pano of 3 with TS lens and cropped to letterbox format.

It was a rather nice morning in one of my favourite areas of the country.

Comments as always welcome and much appreciated.

cheers

Tim

Its a nice image.

Youve selected the overall tone to look as it does using a manual white balance.

Any adjusting the black point really reduces the sense of mistiness, but on the other hand, the far hills are more apparent.

Tried as mod as an example.

Thanks Willie, I did play around with a few settings and was a little undecided on what I preferred. Still am to be honest.

thanks

I keep banging on about John CBlakemore and his poems on film which are exercises in limited tonal range. I wouldn't alter naything here, tonally, although I might experiment with a very long and narrow format, excluding the foreground with the dark stones and bright corner area.

I like this a lot, Tim, and think it looks fine as presented.
However, looking at the other modifications, I like the way they look as well.
This said to me that there are several ways to look at this image, and each are equally attractive, so I tried a modification of my own.

Willie's modification adds the contrast that the mist disguises. But there is still a trace of mist in the background, and the far mountains have a lot more detail, whereas they are getting a little lost in your upload.

In my own modification I cropped to remove the island on the left, and place the other left-hand one nicely inside the left third of the frame. I also placed the base of the other two islands onto a thirds line, which removes some off the bottom of your picture.
I then set about adjusting contrast until the detail was revealed, through the mist.
Just my offering of an alternative.

Pamela.

Thanks John and Pamela.

Glad you both like it as I like all the suggested mods. Trouble is I like aspects of all of them but not sure overall which I prefer.
I've tried darkening portions of it but it looks kind of smudgy so hmmm.....

cheers

I mostly like your composition the way it is... though I'm not 100% with that left-most bit of island. But I've left it in my mod for the sake of balance.
To be honest I'm not crazy about those islands at all... they look to me suspiciously like some Glasgow builders have been fly-tipping. But that's just being subjective. It's those distant mountains that are the main event for me.
Mod uploaded to reflect that.

P.S. Looking at my mod, it could do with being just a bit brighter.

Thanks Alan

I wanted the shape of the darker patch of water fully in so have cropped as is to reflect that. I could modify it more though to retain that and lose the island I guess.
Also I agree about the islands and one reason for having less contrast was that I don't think they dominate quite as much. However then you lose some of the mist effect.

I have uploaded a different composition taken a few mins later by which time the mist had cleared a little more. Its different but it does get rid of the islands.

Thanks for uploading that, Tim. I think it works well, though as with your first one I'd personally like a touch more visibility in the hills.

I take your point about the darker water, but I think your decision to go with lower contrast actually makes those islands more obvious, and I find that once my eye reaches them there's a frustration at not being able to see much of what lies further on...especially as there's a suggestion it could be something more interesting. Showing more detail in the mountains helps the eye to almost disregard them... almost... in favour of that elusive ( and beautiful ) distance. That's how it hits me anyway. But then I do have a bit of a thing about mountains...

This screams out for a very tight crop. A lot off top and bottom where there is virtually nothing anyway. For me, the content is not terribly attractive, but I repeat, for me.
