Shot from the knee on the London Underground. The scene fascinated me, the alternation of iphones and tablets with traditional newspapers. One man was even doing the crossword.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Oh dear, what have we become. I think it was Ruskin who wrote that “The worst thing that can be said of a man is that he did not pay attention”. The whole world and all it’s wonder around us and all we can do is this, vicarious (anti) social media and fake news. Conversation?

Precisely. I remember when mobile phones first arrived they were God's gift for street photography, the sight seemed so extraordinary and absurd. People lost in their own little world instead of doing normal things like looking round and talking to each other. Now you feel out of place if you are not doing this.

A great study of life on the tube Moira. A good title too, I guess 'multi-media' is technically not quite right.

Great observation and a very thought provoking shot. Nobody is talking with their neighbour but that is normal in the big city. My award. SmileSmileSmile

I spent 16 years with a 35-minute rail journey each way every working day. I read a lot - including Churchill's History of the Second World War.

The benefit of public trnasport is that you can choose to be present in a different world, rather than just distracted from this one. But it's not a terribly popular choice. Commuting by car, though... enforced presence in a world that isn't friendly or fun.

Blimey, I'm back after a very frustrating morning (trying to get a calendar picture of the daffodils down at the station, thwarted by wind and sudden rain... ), things have been happening here! My thanks to Howard for the GEA, and to Mal, John, Ken (rambler) and Ken (franken) for their UAs.

Excellent well-composed candid, Moira Smile Wonder what they'd all be doing without their phones, tablets or newspapers? They may even actually talk to one another.... Smile The chap second from left is even multitasking, reading and listening on his headphones at the same time! Wink

Two thoughts:
"All human life is here, but the Holy Ghost seems to be somewhere else" - Anthony Burgess

or

"All human life is there" -motto of The News of the World.

Joline - only ever used an underground system once?

They're what makes a big city work! And often an interesting experience in themselves. Avoid rush hour if you're visiting London for fun, though: one odes not see the city at its best then!

In some cities, they are beautiful - see pictures of the Moscow underground, for instance.
