MNC 12-04-10

By U4eA
Well its that time of the week again folks, and it's my turn to host the Monday night challenge.

I've recently purchased a 30mm 'fast prime' lens and have really enjoyed both the challenge & rewards of having to compose images without the flexibility of a zoom lens and so that has become the basis for tonights challenge, 50mm. You can chosse what ever you wish for a subject, but you need to dig out you 'kit' lens or lock off your zoom at a 50mm focal length to shoot it! For those lucky enough to own a 30mm prime, the equivelant on a DSLR to an old school SLR 50mm by all means use that. I'm really looking forward to seeing how creative you can be!

Have fun!

The boring small print: Wink

To remind those old hands and inform newbies, here are the rules:

1. The photo must be taken, processed and uploaded before 21.00 (one hour).
2. The challenge is started in the main gallery and the gallery description box states what the challenge is. You enter the challenge by uploading your picture as a 'modification' to the challenge announcement.
3. Any image that appears to have been taken before the competition started will be disqualified.
4. Any submission posted after the 'Time's Up' image is uploaded will also be disqualified.
5. The challenge was originally just for fun but now with great prizes courtesy of Photoskill!
6. The person who hosts is the judge for that week.
7. The winner gets to create, run and judge the challenge the following week.

UH? I guess that leaves out every one who doesn't have a DSLR - oh well.

I was wondering that. I see the challenge has got more advanced

Not at all Xiaoli! If your using a compact or hybrid then it will in all likelyhood have a zoom position that equivelant to a 'standard' lens so use that! The real idea is to think about composing at a fixed focal length rather than exactly 50mm in truth.

I assume that's 30mm on a crop sensor, or 50mm on a full frame sensor?

Guess I've set the bar too high then..Sad

I assumed not restricting the subject matter would open things up creatively ...the challenge was supposed to come from having to compose at a fixed focal length not finding something to shoot!

but you always compose at a fixed focal length LOL whatever focal length you chose that is what you are composing at. I mean you can't have two focal lengths in the same picture ... not without stacking them any way

Oh b@lls. Just ran off a few images on my 50mm prime with my 50D and then reread this thread.

Now trying to find my 28-105 to find get images @ 30mm.....

Granted, but what I intended for you all to take a way from this was the refreshing change in thinking when you dont have a zoom lens or a wide/tele button to help you compose. In essence pick a zoom position, or focal length', prior to picking your subject and compose around that. The 50mm/30mm bit really only comes from what is regarded as a 'standard' lens...

Cristain dont get too hung up on it! 50mm will be fine, I'm not that pedantic!

Mmmmm very difficult theme tonight I'm afraid. It's better to choose something that everybody can participate in. The fact that only 2 photo's uploaded seems proof of that I'm afraid. Sorry :-(

And sorry, I don't mean to sound too critical so please take this as some constructive feedback ... part of the reason why I participate in the MNC is the banter on the forum .... there is none tonight. Not a word :-( Great pity.

4 now, but point taken!

Not so sure this should exclude anyone, or frankly that it's should have been especially difficult, but thinking more that I didn't make myself very clear... sorry folks Sad

And so draw a close on this weeks, ahem, controversial MNC Sad the results are as follows:

Third Place:

Slimey - Working Hard. Nicely lit, candid portrait.

Second Place:

Cattyal - Woody's Buttonhole(?) Love the very shallow DOF/bokeh.

First Place:

GPtek - 50mm an a 50mm Again great DOF and lighting, plus it gave me a wry smile.

Thank you to all those who took part, and to those who were flumoxed by the subject I can only say how sorry I am you feel that way, it wasnt the intention at all. Sad Hopefully Geoff will find something for next week more in keeping and will leave enough time for some forum banter!
