Mom feeding her family off a refuse dump, Eastern Cape, South Africa

By Zilba
This pic was taken as the truck started dumping onto the refuse field. The ground is so toxic the glue at base of my boots dissolved and I had to discard them. Many of the family living on this refuse dump were either bare-footed or wearing cast off boots, running shoes or had plastic bags wrapped around their feet. The stench was over whelming coupled with a series of fires in the background vicinity of the dumping.

Anywhere between 15-20 trucks dump a day, this includes domestic refuse, garden refuse and municipal refuse which included deceased animals from the local zoo. Uncommon but it does happen occasionally.

Yes, that's a sleeping baby on her back - a very common sight in this region.

Families living off a refuse dump in the Eastern Cape. I agree that this is a tragic image, no body should be reduced to these circumstances but please don't think these families are without dignity.
They provide for their families in conditions those of us in better situations could not. There's is a really tough lot. There is love, compassion and empathy.

There is a granny (gogo) who has brought up her entire family here there is another with a baby and yes, the absolute travesty of glue sniffing children.
Covid is awful and it has touched all of us but there are those who have struggled against even greater odds. But for the Grace of God go I...

A hard hitting social commentary...I remember when we we visited SA our guide told us stories of Rachman style landlords sub-letting shanty town houses and the occupants sub-let again...not everything is as it seems but clearly a sad tale. Well documented Grin

Just so sad. It's hard to hear about these things and not know what to do about it. Where does one start to fix it.
