Monolith

By TrevBatWCC
Leaving the Calder and Hebble Navigation, just a few metres from where I started my canalside walk is the Hepworth Wakefield, which sits alongside the River Calder. So, took a walk around its wildflower gardens, and came across this sculpture.
'Off Grid' is the first major UK exhibition of work by Sheila Hicks Born in Hastings, Nebraska in 1934, she attended Yale University School of Art and Architecture between 1954 and 1959, studying painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, architecture and art history. Working mainly in textiles, she has been exhibiting in the indoor galleries of the Hepworth Wakefield (though I've not visited inside for a while and it's now finished), and this is one of her outdoor exhibits.
Despite searching dozens of images of her work on t'internet, I can't find this particular one so can't put a name to it, and I've called it 'Monolith'! 😃

Not sure much of her work has a title but she has done quite a few columns of these textiles.

Looks like a homage to the Redwoods (Giant sequoia) of America, Trev.

Fascinating image and narrative Trev. It’s the kind of sculpture I want to touch.

Interesting piece Trev, and informative narrative also. I must admit it does remind me of a Cadbury's confection.

Intriguing sculpture, Trev 😀 I join folk above in thinking it was a giant ‘Flake’ bar 😄 very different to your usual uploads. Never quite sure why people erect sculptures like this, “hey, look, it’s that Giant Flake bar sculpture’ folk might say. ‘Can’t remember the artist, but it looks like a chocolate bar’. As the poshos would say ‘very tactile’ .. (but thinking ‘that looks like a Flake bar!’) 😆

Like a giant, textile totem pole and love the grasses surrounding it Trev. Would imagine natural dyes and maybe she wanted it to weather outside.

I love the colours and work that has gone into it. We don't always need to understand to appreciate.

To me it looks like a load of embroidery threads all fastened together.
The plan with them was to pull one out and all the rest would stay....no tangles.
Not when I did it 😕😁
