This impressive sight is Monta Rosa, the highest mountain in Switzerland. The highest peak in the granite massif is Dufourspitze, which can be seen creating a banner cloud in the top left of the frame. Below the mountain the cloud shadows move across the the surface of the Gorner Glacier which flows down from the right. The attributing glacier to the left is the smaller Grenz Glacier.
The Monte Rosa hut gives a small hint to the scale of the scene with the one drawback that it is nearly impossible to spot. To begin with train your eye on the glacial tarn then focus on the rocky mound to the right. Follow the bold line that divides this mound into two halves and slightly above it is the small fleck of the hut.
The hut, apparent as a small fleck, is actually a 4 storey high building and gives guidance to the towering majesty of the mountain. Never more has a photograph of my own making echoed so closely to the words of Ansel Adams,'No matter how sophisticated you may be, a large granite mountain cannot be denied - it speaks in silence to the very core of your being'.
