The Milanese owe their church to the devil of all people. According to legend, on a cold winter night in 1386, the devil stood at the bedside of the city's lord Gian Galeazzo Visconti. He had, as was fitting, red-glowing eyes, stank of sulphur from his mouth and asked the pale prince to build a church in his name with images of devilish spirits and demons. Otherwise, he would snatch Visconti's soul and ensure his eternal stay in hell. Anxious, Visconti immediately rushed to the bishop to start building a new cathedral in place of the rather modest main church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Despite the diabolical threats, the new cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin Mary
