More travels

By Tianshi_angie
Thanks to all the sdvice and suggestions, I finally managed to get focus in the orb. Not all of the tree is in focus but the central area is no longer a blur.

Well done for persevering to get the shot you wanted Angie, to get all the globe in focus you could try stacking Smile

I reckon you've cracked it! The focus is on the angel decoration, which is just right.

I do think that it benefits from tweaks, I still want to flip vertically because a) that gives the sense of the orb suspended, and b) there is no obvious orientation to the background so the tree may as well be the right way up.

I've added a quick mod, I flipped, made a Levels adjustment to brighten the bokeh, and then did some work just on the orb - very gentle dodging (highlights) and burning (shadows), plus some local sharpening.

It's interesting that your upload has appeared in the Critique Gallery close to this , my thought on both is: bokeh is about light, it needs to be bright, to sing out.

Thank you Moira - I do agree - it looks good with the photo inverted. Just so much easier with the orb safely secure-(ish) on the Gorilla pod. And it was help from both Ian and John that helped me over the last hurdle - so thank you everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. We have a sunny day - at last - I may get a chance to experiment a little more with natural light which I think would make things brighter generally. But time is also an element at the moment.

Well done, Angie!

That's all worked, and all done last night - so you may not need the blog...

Thanks John - and thank you for all your help. It is very much appreciated. And I wish you and your wife a good Christmas - and in the New Year a light that shines ever more brightly at the end of this tunnel.

The focus is right where it should be Angie and the bokeh from the tree lights works well.
Nothing overdone here and I do like Moiras flipped mod, a Christmas card in the making.

I did do a very quick mod, flipped, cropped from the bottom a touch, sharpened and lightened very slightly.

Much better. Two more tips, - rather than using f/1.8, use f/2.8 - f/4. The orb will look sharper without sharpening the tree; and dont apply a minus exposure correction, use a + correction of +2/3 instead

Similar mod uploaded, a lot brighter.

Thank you Sylvia and Willie - like both of the mods. May have time later in the week Willie to try your suggestions - I'll be interested to see the difference.
