Mottisfont House 1

By pamelajean
Thankyou for looking, for your interest, your comments, votes and awards on my Crystal Chandelier & Painting.

And now, we go from the detail to the big picture, the home of Maud and Gilbert Russell, a comfortable country house where artists and writers came to relax and be inspired. Mrs Russellís weekend parties were celebrated in Londonís artistic circles from the 1930s to the 1950s.

What makes Mottisfont so unusual is that it started life as a medieval priory and was later converted into a house, with the priory church still encased inside it.

The font in the garden is the ancient spring that first persuaded settlers to stop here over a thousand years ago. Itís a quiet, contemplative pool which now flows into a stream garden and winds through shady trees down to the river.
