Mount Vesuvius

By DicksPics
Taken, hand held, from our hotel balcony in Sorrento last week.
Mount Vesuvius is 14 miles, as the crow flies, from where I was standing.
The sun was at the correct angle to light up the the inside of the caldera, which I was pleased about!
I've done quite a bit of work on the image in Lightroom and PS and I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome.
We walked around the edge of the caldera nearest to the camera - that was quite an experience!
You could see one or two fumaroles inside the caldera - just to remind you that there's still a bit of life smoldering away!!!
I'll post some images I took at the top over the next few days.
Many appreciative thanks for all views, votes and comments on my 'Capri Sunset' upload!SmileSmile
Have a great day.

Richard

Richard, A fine image given the distance you were away. I've got the same lens and they are fantastic. I look forward to seeing the shots from the rim and it still demonstrates the power of nature!

I have some old photographs of when I climbed to the top Richard, glad I have them as would be impossible to do the climb now, you have done a great job with the processing, Lightroom 5 is now very powerful, love the image.

This is an excellent image, ****, well worth all the effort! The cloud above the volcano almost looks to be exuding from the top! It does look a desolate place to visit and is obviously still quite dangerous.
(I don't know about "fumaroles" but that's what you get from walking around the crater rim!)

Great image and it sounds like you are a bit of a vulcanologist.

I have passed it and been relativily close to it, but not up it. Can't wait to see more.

Regards.

Great telephoto shot: and what an experience to be up there on the edge of the caldera........as long as all was quiescent volcanically.

What! you didn't get a shot of it actually exploding? I am so disappointed Richard GrinGrin.............. Disappointed I wasn't there taking this shot, BlushBlush what an image to have. You may have worked on it, but the quality must be there because even Light room and PS can't hide a bad image and this clearly is not a bad image.

Am I jealous? well, I might be, just a little.

Thanks to everyone for their very kind and supportive comments!
And thanks to Lynne for the 'not unexpected' modification which I was secretly hoping for!!SmileSmile
It adds a lot more definition and contrast - just what I wanted but didn't quite manage to achieve!
It was quite hazy when I took the original and wanted the image to have more 'punch' - Lynne has achieved this!!
