One or two points for everyone to comment on. This little chap visits me in better weather when I feed the birds. He/she is not very big, but very brave and comes to nick peanuts. I have put this up for comment, but also to illustrate that a modern compact can do a reasonable job if used correctly. (I'm not saying the result is perfect, you will tell me that, but I want to show the beginners that their compact will produce quite good images.)
This is with the Canon SX40HS bridge camera on a monopod for support and to help stop any shake because the lens was at 35X, 840mm equivalent. ISO100, 'A' setting at smallest possible aperture, f8 giving about 1/125 as I remember. So, camera support, even with image stabilisation, a necessity.
