My Own Private Mauerweg (1)

By GwailoAngMo
Berlin now has its official Mauerweg. We had our own little section of wall we followed. We were going to go to Berlin in 1989 for my birthday celebration, but finances and time meant we had to make alternative arrangements and we went to Dublin for a weekend break instead.

Having missed the events of Schicksalstag 1989, we went to Berlin in 1990. There was precious little wall left, but there was an open wound following the route of the wall in the city. We knew where the wall was as we had bought a Baedecker guide prior to the fall of the wall. Our journey began one bitterly cold and foggy morning at Check Point Charlie, ending at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, now the Ostbahnhof.

Our journey to Checkpoint Charlie varied, and we saw the city evolving on our various trips. I think this building was on the DDR side of the wall, in Niederkirchnerstraße. I assume the graffiti to be of more recent vintage. I included the modern fencing as a less impenetrable barrier. The "spider’s web" was a bonus. What exactly it was or what purpose it served I don't know.
