Nagasaki Peace Statue

By Ayelet_A
Back to Japan, and this time a visit to Nagasaki.
As you probably know, during World War II, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made Nagasaki the second and last city in the world to be subject to nuclear warfare.
On August 9, 1945, Nagasaki was the target of the world's second atomic bomb attack (and first plutonium bomb) at 11:02 a.m., when the north of the city was destroyed and an estimated 40,000 people were killed by the bomb nicknamed "Fat Man". According to statistics found within Nagasaki Peace Park, the death toll from the atomic bombing totaled 73,884, as well as another 74,909 injured, and another several hundred thousand diseased and dying due to fallout and other illness caused by radiation.
The statue seen in the image is the Peace Statue created by sculptor Seibou Kitamura.
The statue's right hand points to the threat of nuclear weapons while the extended left hand symbolizes eternal peace. The mild face symbolizes divine grace and the gently closed eyes offer a prayer for the repose of the bomb victims' souls. The folded right leg and extended left leg signify both meditation and the initiative to stand up and rescue the people of the world. Installed in front of the statue is a black marble vault containing the names of the atomic bomb victims and survivors who died in subsequent years.
After visiting the peace park we went to the atomic bomb museum found only a few streets from there. The museum holds an amazing collection of evidences from the bombing including clocks that are frozen on the hour 11:02 - the time of the bombing.
