Not that happy with this but thought I'd better get something uploaded for the "Critique Buddies June 2009 - 4" and look forward to critique.

Not happy? I don't know why not. The detail is there, and it's well lit.

The background needs tidying if I'm being critical, looks like cotton fluff all over, a very simple thing to do in software.

Gets my vote, cos it's more exciting than most of the THREADS on the forums here Wink Sorry I couldn't resist.

I like the mono processing. An unusual subject matter! The composition works well. There is a loss of detail on the needle and thread toward the bottom of the image. I think the lighting has worked well leading the eye to the cotton reel. I do feel that the prescence of cotton fluff on the background lends itself to the subject matter. Overall I like this image for its simplicity.

I would never have come up with this idea - its a good one, and the mono conversion works well. The end of the thread is nicely set up in that "s" shape curve there. The thread is not burnt out, you can see the textures. I have mixed thoughts about the fluff on the backdrop. One part of me says that when dressmaking there was always fluff about - well there was whenever I got the sewing machine out anyway! Smile. The other part of me says it would be nice to see a clean backdrop. I will have to sit on the fence on that.
Overall - I like it very much.

I was struck by how well focused and clear it all seemed. Read the comments and still of the same opinion!!

I think you have an excellent photo here. I think it's beautifully sharp, and I love the detail in different areas, the texture of the thread, of the reel and the way the light catches it.
I saw the fluff on the background but to be honest thought it was on my screen and ignored it.
What I find mildly disturbing is the totally mono - tone of the background, it means the reel and thread appear to be suspended rather than sitting on a surface, and that goes against my practical mind. I wonder if it would be better if you could see a range of tones in the background, or at least that the needle and reel are sitting on a solid surface.

Crit Buddy:

I love the simplicity of this, it's a nice clean image which I think would look great as a blown up print/canvas on the wall.

Although the background 'fluff' isnt instantly noticable I think it would be better to clone it out to ensure a crisp black background, unlike lynne I like how it seems to be floating, I think it adds to the image's simplicity and sharpness.

A very successful image!

i like the composition here and the decision to go mono was a good call.
the shape and needle work well and the plain black ground add to its strength.
