...travelling through the Mojave desert we came across the archetypal 'one horse town' or what was left of it.
All that remained was a general store/post office - beyond that just a long abandoned house and the derelict original store..
It wasn't one of the ghost towns mentioned in guide books, but that's just what it was.
Peering through the doorless door frame of the old store, the name 'Store' stilll just visible against a faded red painted corrugated iron wall, one could see the derelict, lopsided counter, with the empty shelves behind - lit by the shafts of light through gaps in the roof and walls.
It compelling - trying to picture what the shelves had contained back then and who had served behind the counter and whom they had served and what they had chatted about!
Poigniantly, there was a grave of a young child under a large Joshua Tree by the road side, still maintained - her name, Andrea Beth, only just visible, scrawled on a faded bit of timber thrust into the ground - no other details discernable.
What somehow made the whole scene even more fascinating was that it was difficult to image why the town (Town ???) had existed at all before or (indeed who the remaining trading post served now) - it was in a virtualy unhinhabited area.
Anyway we prowled around unhindered, feeling very much the intruders, and took a couple of shots - I may put up others later. This one is of the only house with that wonderful tree once obviously watered and maintained but now gone it's own deathly way.
Regards Dave - as always it's worth looking BIG
