Fiona this is very simply stunning, I'm jumping in straight away with my UA and I suspect that it won't be the only one here.
Things that make it special - the clean light and the open background; the precision of those crazy squiggles at the centre of the flower. The tension of the two diagonals of stem and flower, relieved by all the other lines; the way the foreground green spikes drift into softness, enough for atmosphere but not enough to be a distraction; the way you've gone in close, at that oblique angle - it conveys optimism, but also questions, uncertainty.
I suspect that some people would prefer this a little darker on the petals, but it's about the light for me, first and foremost.

Very pretty Fiona, that plain bg looks good against the pretty blue of the Nigella.
Enough detail on the flower, good colour & a drop of softness to the green bits.
Nicely done as this is a difficult flower to get a good composition on,knowing what to include or exclude as far as the greenery is concerned.......a bit like Gladiolii...where to stop ! Wink

Delicate and beautiful. Difficult to add a new slant on such a familiar subject but you done it and done it so well.
