For me, a very evocative picture...why ?

Aged just 15 yrs in 1953, I left school to become an apprentice joiner to a small builders who maintained many large houses and estates. We often made oak gates and fences similar to this one....So your image has me wondering what the joiner was like who made that gate, and shaped the heavy oak posts.

If we made a similar gate it would be our job to install it....a labourer would help, to dig a pair of 3ft deep post holes, then the joiner ensured that the posts were upright at the right distance apart.....he would then fit the hinges then, hang, the gate, followed by screwing on the latch.

Everything was done by hand in our gas-lit joiners power tools whatsoever....
