No Hassle!

By AlanBW
This is the final upload of my series of shots taken in Turkey, although the occasional additional one might appear in the future. It is also my last upload in 2006 as we will be flying to Thailand in a few days and won't return until January.

The image above was taken on our final morning in Marmaris and we were up and about early to have another look at the old quarter. Turkish shopkeepers and street vendors can sometimes be persistent and even aggressive in their efforts to make you buy from them, but this was early on a Sunday morning and they hadn't got into their stride, so we had a peaceful and pleasant stroll. The shopkeeper above didn't even look up from his Sunday newspaper and we were able to browse in his establishment unhindered. We actually wanted to purchase an item and had to disturb his reading in order to make the transaction!

A polite refusal was usually sufficient to ward off the more aggressive traders, but on one occasion when I was being pestered by a jeweller in the busy, bustling bazaar I replied, 'My friend, I have no interest in jewellery unless I have to pay for it - and I have told my wife that today she is not buying'. It took a few seconds for this to sink in, then he laughed. We laughed too and he didn't bother us again, even though he spotted us on a few more occasions.

There was a bar / restaurant on Marmaris harbour that traded on the maxim of No Hassle and whereas some nearby establishments were quite boistrous in their approach, this one simply let people read the bar tariff and menu unhindered. It definitely worked; they got a lot of custom, including ours.

Thanks for your interest in the series of shots from Turkey. Your comments have been much appreciated.

Wishing everyone on EPZ a wonderful Christmas and a happy, healthy, prosperous and successful 2007.

A great image of a Turkish shop and Keeper . Reminds me of when I was trying to buy a bracelet for my grand daughter . I had the Tour guide with me . I went out of the shop and the tour guide went off I beseeched him to return , he said I was doing OK on my own!! The shopkeeper rushed out and let me have it for half the price xx
