Northern Flicker

By taggart
Northern Flicker
Colaptes autatus. 12 inches (30 cm). male and female identical except. she does not have a black mustache

V2 ---the front view

The flicker, a HUGE woodpecker, rarely shows up at feeders, only will be seen in the woods. Except--this one turned up near our feeders during a storm---very nervous , he made a hasty exit when he noticed the camera aimed on him. Thus-- not stellar images, but worthy for those who are interested in birds!

PS. I only got the two images!

Yes, Jenn, These flicker seem to be more aware and nervouse than many birds. Good to see this one in winter colours. Extra yellow in the wing feathers. We humans must leave more ' holy ' old trees standing for flickers to prosper. TG
Good position capture giving a 👍 nice back length. Well done Jenn.

I like the lead image - interesting plumage markings, especially the red patch on the back of its head.

They are an attractive bird, I love V2 Jenn
With them being such a big pecker they have been known to do damage to people's homes if they take a liking. We have a co worker that was nearly pulling her hair out while one damaged her new homes siding and fascia . Unfortunately she had to go commando on it in the end.
