nothochrysa capitata

By CarolG
Nothochrysa capitata, or black lacewing, are seen during early Spring and Summer, and are not as common as the green lacewing. They are slow moving and make a ready meal for a foraging bird, so are rarely seen flying during the day. The larvae are semi-aquatic, and fed on the larvae of midges and other small species. Lacewings court by ‘tremulation’, a low frequency sound produced by vibrating their abdomens. The male and female take turns tremulating, causing the leaf they are standing on to vibrate.

A fantastic find, Carol! Brilliantly photographed! I have erected an owlbox, which has become the finest, super high level beehive in Tulbagh! This has become a mixed blessing, as our pepper tree is in bloom, and the bee`s chase everything away, including all the insect life!! Never mind, things should get back to normal once the pepper tree bloom is over. Regards Martin

It's so gorgeous. What is it about some insects that we just love, when others make us shudder!
