O'Connell Street

By TrevBatWCC
Well, after what should have been a 3¼ hour trip across a choppy Irish Sea on Tuesday, a predicted storm travelling across Ireland got to Dublin before us, and within sight of Dublin we got an announcement on the ferry of the 80 mph gales preventing us from docking until the harbourmaster deemed the wind had subsided enough to safely enter the harbour. So, after bobbing about in Dublin Bay for another 3¼ hours in howling winds we finally arrived! Sad
Despite the shaky start, had a super time in Dublin, nice hotel and good food (and Guinness, of course!), lots to see & do, and the natives were so very friendly Smile After a slightly wet start after breakfast, Wednesday turned out quite nice with lots of sunshine nearly all day. Leaving the hotel and heading down O'Connell Street, V1 was the first image I took. The large building on the left is the General Post Office; the large pole to the right is the 'Spire of Dublin', officially titled the 'Monument of Light'. It's a stainless steel pin-like monument 121.2 metres in height and 3 metres wide at the base, and was completed in January 2003 at a cost of €4,000,000. V2 was taken a few minutes later, looking back across the O'Connell Bridge from the south side of the River Liffey.

Good memories, we stayed just up the road and turn left a bit..
Re the Spire, I hope you came across the alternative names, which include The Stiffy at the Liffey and The Erection at the Intersection. Dublin is very good at unofficial names for its monuments...

Excellent photography as usual Trevor, I have been looking forward to your trip to see Dublin.
Your ferry trip sounded scary. We are crossing the Bass straight between Melbourne and Tasmania in a few weeks time...a 12 hour crossing ...the crossing can be wild...hope ours is better than yours

Two lovely shots of this wonderful place that I have yet to visit.

Jim Larkin featured in V1 looks like the kind of guy I'd like to meet.
