Odd Behaviour!

By KarenFB
I witness some odd behaviour between these two Specked Woods the other day. As you can see one was lying on its side, not moving at all - whilst the other kept poking it! I wondered at first if a spider had got the one on the right, but there was no sign of one! After a few minutes the left one stopped its poking and flew off, I went closer to see if the other was dead, but it righted itself and flew off too!

I've never seen that behaviour before and I'm still wondering if it was a male/female thing (the female refusing the attention), or a territorial thing (the 'dead' one showing subservience!).

I watched for quite a while and both butterflies seemed to keep to their own patch of hazel tree!
