Off Roading - DON'T

By jinstone
In this case they got away with it. Travel with more than one vehicle, but not too close together. Gallons not a few litres of water, spades, tyre mats. preferably Sat Phone. Full tank of fuel plus spare. Spare tyres (plural). Let some one know your exact route and estimated time of arrival. Stick to your route. If you get in trouble stay with the vehicle, it's easier to spot. This was a well travelled 4km stretch from the car park up to Deadvlei. If all the local professional vehicles were taking a route some 80 metres further to the right, why go this way? I met a couple who had tried to off road and had become stuck. No other vehicle travelled their route for 30 minutes and they were totally unprepared. You could wait an awful lot longer.

Sorry if this sounds negative, but a suitable warning

I some ways you'll be more conscious than most of us with your winter conditions that aren't that dissimilar. You need plenty of people to lift and push once you've slipped of the road. Like your pictures.
