OH THE GLAMOUR

By Hanners
Hi guys, now I know you prefer landscape shots with beautiful skies and rolling rivers, but sometimes landscapes can be easier than doing portrait shoots. Take this little fella for example, once you have set up the lights, got them at the right settings, angles and so on, then you set your flash gun; you don’t want too much, just enough to fill, after that you have to get the camera settings right. Once you’re happy you get your model into the studio, who has been practising his smile, but as soon as you pick up the camera, the smile disappears and crying and tantrums start, oh the glamour….
In the end, I let him play with his toys; I had put the camera on the tripod and had now set the focus manually, so I could use the remote release. To get this shot, I simply asked if he could see his reflection in the lens, as he leaned over I trigged the release.

His parents, aunties and uncles, of whom there are many, loved the shot and all bought copies. Now the company that made the shirt, want to use the image as an advertisement for their clothing, so in the end it was worth the patience and effort, just like in landscapes when you’re waiting for the right light, but sometimes, just sometimes, landscapes can be so much easier. Here endeth the lesson.

Hope you guys like it, comments are more than welcome

Thanks for peeping

10 out of 10 for patience! Portraits are hard and portraits of unco-operative children harder. Glad you had such (deserved) success with this shot! - regards Robin

You've captured the spirit of a 'little man'. I'll remeber that tip too - 'Can you see yourself in the lens?' One of the most original chat up lines I've heard from a photographer. John

Love your commentary Tony . I know the feeling . People were always asking me to take pictures of their wee darlings . I explained that it took more than just pointing the camera. You had to get to know them .
This is a fantastic shot . Love his endearing wee grin . Glad it turned out right for you . xxx
