Old Jan

By conrad
Meet Old Jan ('Oude Jan'), the old age pensioner among the birds in the Dutch parrot shelter Jacqueline and I visited today.

If Jan looks a bit battered, that's because he is just that. He was rescued from his home after suffering terrible abuse. I'll spare you the gruesome details, but suffice it to say that he only has one eye left. That should give you an idea.

Anyway, he's been in the shelter since 1987 and more or less serves as the shelter's ambassador. And despite his age I thought he was a beautiful bird. That's to say, he looks good as long as you shoot this side - you are, after all, looking at his only eye here.

This was shot in quite a dark spot, so I upped the ISO to 400 and threw the lens wide open. The shutter speed was a bit of a gamble, because it might not have worked, handheld. Here's some more info about my settings:

f:2.8, ISO 400, 114mm, 1/100.

Comments and mods are welcome, as always!

Thanks for looking...
