On the Crest of a Wave

Wednesday last week at Trebarwith Strand, when the sun came out after a dreary bank holiday weekend.
Whilst my partner soaked up the rays, I faffed about with the camera, trying out various ideas.
This is one of them.

Intentionally shot with a panoramic crop in mind as my position and the state of the tide were both favourable.

This is processed with my normal "micro-contrast" adjustments, followed by a brief interlude in LAB mode (the first for many months, in fact) to help separate the cyans/blues/greens from each other, and then for the first time in ages I used the H&S (a seldom used tool) to actually severely desaturate the image.

I may put up the original colour version and a mono conversion at some point for comparison, but this is my preferred version.
IMO, the lack of colour actually makes it more dynamic.

I also usually find that whenever I write something lengthy like this, hardly anyone shows up to look! So thank you for getting this far and I hope you like this as much as I do.

Hey Bill

Like the Pano format for this which gives a good illusion of scale - especially with your centrally placed subject. Looks like a cracking wave. Agree about the desaturation for that dynamic feel!

I bet this would look superb when printed large. The wave formations are an art form in themselves, and I love the way they dwarf the sportsman.

Although your write up started to lose me at Lab mode and H&S I do find it helpful in giving some of us uneducated an idea of what has been done in PS.

Superbly done to enhance the power of the waves at Trebarwith Strand. The surfer is certainly dwarfed, and a quick estiamtion puts that wave at 12 feet, which is damned powerful. I agree that this looks great LARGE, and would print out well.

Anyway, immense image and I knew this would be one of your special pano and large would be a real treat - glad to say I was not disappopinted...cracking image and so powerful. I like the treatment to.
