One Lens Walk

By LynneJoyce
Hirst Woods again, these images are the result of my taking a one lens walk with the Canon. Doing this forces me to concentrate on the capabilities and limitations of that one lens. What it doesn't allow me to do is control the weather and therefore the light as these clearly demonstrate. I set off in bright sunshine and by the time I reached Hirst Woods it had clouded over. Later it rained so I had to put the camera away.

I am tempted to hire me and my cameras out to sub Saharan Africa because I always seems to invoke rain! It even happened in Lanzarote, an island that usually has zero rainfall. Does anyone else have that dubious talent?

The post concentrates on the vegetation. There are several of Bluebells, just at the end of their season now but still worthy of capture. We are fortunate that the Bluebells there are Hyacinthoides non-scripta, the native British Bluebell rather than the Spanish invader Hyacinthoides hispanica. I'm not sure whether the Wood Sorrel featured in the opener and V's 5, 8 and 14 is Oxalis tuberosa or Oxalis trillifolia but whatever, it is a pretty, delicate specimen. The rest I haven't finally identified.

Whatever, thank you for viewing and I hope that you enjoy at least some of these images.

Beautiful. A good plan with the single lens. I carry a ton of gear but by the time I've changed a lens the subject has probably flown away anyway!

My award for your excellent lead image, Lynne.

Over the past few years, Ju' and I have had some rain on every holiday and looking at the forecast for Afytos, Halkidiki, we could well encounter more this time. (From 23rd May to 3rd June) So you're not alone, Lynne Smile
Thankfully, we wont shrink or rust.

Beautiful set Lynne and excellent presentation , without the rain you wouldn't have this wonderful floral display to capture 😆

You did well with this woodland set, V4 in particular! I shall have to hire you for my garden which despite the rain, is dry, as we have just found out!

A very lovely and varied collection, and of course, so beautifully framed and presented 👍
And yes, I have your talent too! The outing to Carmarthen on my Tenby holiday immediately comes to mind, though it was dull and overcast when the coach set off it was fine all morning, and I'd only walked a couple of hundred yards after getting off the coach, and the very minute I reached to get the camera out of the bag, it started raining! ☔ It does also often work the opposite way around - I can go around taking photos in cr*p weather, and as soon as I put the camera away the sun comes out... 🌞

As to a dubious talent--- maybe all of mine are 'dubious!' but you clearly know how to capture wild botanicals---
and yes, I believe you have garlic mustard---we have bushels of it--

These days I never take with me any more than one camera and one lens, having decided in advance what my subjects are to be and which set up might achieve the results I want. For example for my fungi shots I can think of nothing better than my Sony Cybershot with it's swivel screen, and when out with it I limit myself to the one subject matter.
This is a lovely set of woodland shots, Lynne, and you have done well: for flowers, I find subdued light by far the best and I tend to avoid capturing them in sunlight........far better results in IMHO with a cloud cover in place. Lovely to see the native UK bluebells. I have to admit that this year I have taken more shots than usual of the Spanish variety and when in mass they do make quite a spectacle. But they do not have the hyacinth like scent of our native species which can be quite heavenly.

An exercise we could all gain from Lynne, I am forever two camera man, hang over from Newspaper Days when the fear of one camera breaking down on assignment would bring moisture to my palms.

Every shot is worthy of it's place in your series, lesson well learned it seems.

An exercise I try now and again - one lens - it does make you work harder.
