One Woman And Her Dog

By saltireblue
Sitting in the middle of the square in front of the Centre Pompidou, this Romany woman and her dog had only a pigeon for company.
Paris is full of Rumanians and Romanies who live from hand to mouth by begging. We have the same problem in Oslo. The head of the local Romany community claims the beggars are Rumanians and not Romany travellers. No matter who they are, these beggars lived in absolute squalor under motorway bridges or other public placec that provide relief from the rain, if not the cold.
I saw one person approach this woman and give her a couple of cans of dog food, but no money.
The EU today.
Shot through the thick plate glass window of the facade, hence a tad soft.

Many thanks for the recent interest and comments. It makes an old man very happy.

Thanks for bothering.

A rather sad and emotional image, however one cannot shy away from the quality of this superb documentary photograph.

at first glance I thought this is a nice architectural shot...then I noticed the lady+dog...adds a `je ne sais quoi' to the image....but isn't that the QE2 funnel in the background....suspect you're really on a cruise!! WinkSmileSmile

ps why do beggars always have dogs? Smile

One of those 'strange but true' observations.
A couple of years ago we had an invasion of similar women (and young boys) who had been supplied with a tattered accordion, been taught one tune (always 'The Anniversary Song', always imperfectly taught and inattentively learned) and stuck on street corners in the foulest weather to 'busk'. I doubt they made any more in Prudhoe than in Paris.

The location instantly recognisable, the sparse pedestrian traffic more of a surprise.
The b&w excellent - no surprise at all.

It's one of the ventilators for an underground car park, I believe.

What a life - I can't imagine being reduced to this and hope I never will be. How lucky I wasn't dealt her card at birth.

I like the way you've composed this shot Malc, great stuff.

Sadly this scene is enacted across the world, it's sad, but it's big business. Not all these people are homeless, many are bussed into the city centres and make a decent amount of money. I kid you not, they all but took over the Big Issue selling in Glasgow. They come from Romania and around and they are organised, (some of them) not all, but enough to chase most of the genuine article off the streets.
Giving food for the dog sounds a good way to get the message across that we think they are chancers, some of course are drug atticts. (Another story)

Sorry to rant on your image as it does tell a story Malc, it's easy to be casual about poverty with a roof over your head.

God help anybody sitting under that vent!!!

The space surrounding her just increases the emotiveness of the image. Unfortunately, I know that many of these can actually get more doing this than working.

Beautifully composed (verticals, horizontals, space). The individual lost in a big world. This is one of my very favourite places for people-watching, glad you found it!

Nay bother Lad.

It's nice to go abroad and listen to all chatter in different languages as it reminds one of home.

Brilliant composition Malc - the low position of the subject in the frame really enhances the feeling of isolation. Great work
