The clear blue sky and the white buildings with the tiled steps - the perfect Mediterranean vision. The things memories are made of.

I love the composition in this image Elena. The stairs lead the eye into the image and lovely contrast between the blue sky and white walls

I can't remember who said that "A photograph is about depth of emotion , not depth of fileld"
This has bags of emotion in it, as you have revealed to us.
My sympathy to your loss.

From a technical point ot view, since you have asked for critique, I find that the picture is leaning a bit to the right. I understand that may be caused by the amount ot pressure forcedd on the shutter button, as you hold the camera upright, especially if you hold it with one hand only.
I think you should have taken the picture from a point further to the left, either the centre of the staircase or as your left arm touches the wall of teh building where the steps are. This tiny move to the left would cause the elimination of the flora visible, which is chromatically irrelevant to the rest of the picture. Most importantly though, since flora is a sign of life, in a theoritical concept its absence would echo the loss of life.

May the sunshine warm your heart too.
